The Department of Ophthalmology at Aarhus University Hospital has, for many years, been the leading centre in Denmark for treatment of corneal diseases and corneal transplantation and also hosts the only cornea bank in the country. The department have participated in several EU-funded studies on clinical outcomes in corneal transplantation, immunological profiling of cornea transplant patients and corneal regenerative approaches. Aarhus University Hospital is closely collaborating with Aarhus University to generate research results. A high number of faculties and PhD-students, employed by the university, are working at the hospital. Being part of a university hospital, all departments, centres, institutes etc. are committed to integrate research in their clinical work. Corneal refractive surgery has been an important clinical activity at the department since the 1980ties and has formed the basis for several clinical and animal based scientific studies and PhD projects on various aspects of PRK and LASIK. Moreover, the department has been strongly involved in laboratory and clinical studies on small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) procedures with emphasis on optics and quality of vision.
AUH will manage the demonstration activities and lead the clinical validation of the VEMoS software in coordination with the rest of the clinics implicated in the clinical trial.

Prof. Dr. Jesper Hjortdal Leading Clinical Manager
Prof. Jesper Hjortdal received his medical degree from Aarhus University in 1987 and became a specialist in ophthalmology in 1997. He has trained in corneal and refractive surgery at Aarhus University Hospital and Moorfield’s Eye Hospital, London, UK. In 2001 he became consultant at the Department of Ophthalmology and was appointed Professor of Ophthalmology at Aarhus University in 2009. Prof Hjortdal received his PhD in 1995, achieved the degree of Doctor of Science in 1998 and has published more than 200 original peer-reviewed papers mainly on corneal and refractive surgery related to corneal optics and biomechanical properties of the cornea. Prof. Hjortdal will be the point of contact of AUH within the consortium and he will lead the clinical validation of the VEMoS software in the Aarhus University Hospital.
Dr. Anders Gyldenkerne (PhD candidate at the Department of Ophthalmology at Aarhus University Hospital)
Since medical school Dr. Gyldenkerne has been active in corneal refractive research at Aarhus University Hospital. He received his medical degree from Aarhus University in 2015 and has published several papers on the optical performance of the eye before and after LASIK and SMILE surgery. During his PhD study he has also worked several months at the Visual Optics Institute, College of Optometry, University of Houston, Houston, TX.
Henrik Sejersen, B Optom (Clinical Optometrist at the Aarhus University Hospital)
Henrik Sejersen has been employed at Aarhus University Hospital for a decade. Besides taking part in pre- and post-operative examinations of patients undergoing refractive surgery, Henrik Sejersen has played an essential role in a large number of EU and industry funded GCP monitored clinical research projects on corneal transplantation and refractive surgery.
